How to use the converter

  1. Choose the currency.
  2. Type the amount, with cents if it has them (for example 1,250.50).
  3. Choose the format: Cents in words (…and fifty cents) or Check style (…and 50/100).
  4. Choose uppercase or sentence case and press Copy text.

Writing amounts on a check

On a check you write the amount twice: in numbers in the box and in words on the line. A common way to write the words line is the whole amount in words, then the cents as a fraction of 100:

One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100

Write it starting at the far left of the line and draw a line through the unused space, so that nothing can be added. If the words and the numbers differ, the bank may pay the amount in words, because in most U.S. states the words prevail over the numbers.

Rules the converter follows

  • It uses American English: the short scale (a billion is a thousand millions) and hyphens in compound numbers (twenty-one, ninety-nine).
  • There is no "and" after the hundreds: 101 is written one hundred one.
  • "and" joins the whole amount to the cents.
  • A single unit takes the singular (one dollar) and any other amount the plural (zero dollars, two dollars).
  • Amounts are rounded to the cent, half up.

Amounts of up to 999 quadrillion can be written.

Amounts in words on invoices and contracts

Writing the total in words on an invoice, a receipt or a contract helps to avoid disputes over the amount. The documents you create with the app write the total in words automatically, in the language of the document.
